[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *séiˀlāˀ. Cognates include Old Prussian seilin (“diligence [acc. sg.]”), nosēilis (“spirit”) and Proto-Slavic *sìla > Old Church Slavonic сила (sila, “strength, force; miracle”), Serbo-Croatian sȉla (“force, power”). No certain cognates outside of Balto-Slavic. Compare Old Icelandic seilask (“endeavour”).
