From Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁- (“to grind”). Cognate with Old Armenian աղամ (ałam, “grind, pound”), Hindi आटा (āṭā, “flour”), Avestan 𐬀𐬴𐬀 (aṣ̌a, “ground”), Persian آرد (ārd, “flour”).
