Etymology

From Middle Persian ANŠWTA, mltwm’ (mardōm, mankind, people). Related to مرد (mard, man), مردن (mordan, to die). Cognate to Sogdian [script needed] (mrtxm’y /⁠martoxmē, martəxmē⁠/, people, man). Analyzable in Persian as مرد (mard, man) +‎ تخم (toxm, descent, seed) (lit. "descent of man")[1].
