Etymology
[edit]Compound of 連 (ren, “connect”) and 声 (shō, “voice”). The shō changes to jō as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

- (linguistics) a morphological change of an initial syllable of the second kanji under the influence of the historical coda of the first kanji in a word, such as 天皇, whose pronunciation is not *ten’ō but tennō.
