Borrowed from English idol,[1][2][3] from Latin idolum, from Ancient Greek εἴδωλον (eídōlon, image, idol), from εἶδος (eîdos, form), from Proto-Indo-European *wéydos (seeing, image), from *weyd- (to see).

First attested in the late 1880s.[3]
