From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsúšyati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂sús-ye-ti, from *h₂sews- (“to be dry”). Cognate with Ancient Greek αὔω (aúō, “to ignite, singe”), Russian суши́ть (sušítʹ, “to dry”), Lithuanian saũsinti, Old English sēarian (whence English sear).
