From Russian сумон (sumon), from Tuvan сумон (sumon), from Mongolian ᠰᠤᠮᠤ (sumu), from Manchu ᠨᡳᡵᡠ (niru, a large arrow, militia company, district). Ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *sumun (arrow).
