From Proto-Indo-Iranian *kʰā́dati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷh₂ḗdeti ~ *kʷh₂édeti, from *kʷh₂ed-.

Cognate with Old Armenian խածանեմ (xacanem) and Proto-Slavic *kǫsàti (to bite).
