From Persian اصفهان (Esfahân), ultimately from Old Persian *spādāna- (connected with the army) or *spādānām (of the armies), from 𐎿𐎱𐎠𐎭 (spāda-, army)[1], from Proto-Iranian *cwáHdaH (army); see it for more.
