Etymology[edit]

From Latin algorismus, a corruption of the name Arabic اَلْخَوَارِزْمِي (al-ḵawārizmī). Spelling with -th- from French algorithme, influenced by unrelated Ancient Greek ἀριθμός (arithmós, number) (whence English arithmetic).
