Vietnamese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 平定 (“subjugation”).
This land was the birthplace of the Tây Sơn brothers, who overthrew both the Nguyễn lords of Đàng Trong and the Trịnh lords of Đàng Ngoài. After Nguyễn Ánh, the first emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty, reclaimed the throne of Đại Việt in 1799, the region was renamed Bình Định (literally, “subjugation”) to symbolize the Nguyễn's ultimate triumph over the rebellious Tây Sơn.
