Etymology

Potentially attested as barle in 1237, attested with certainty as barle in 1260. Compound of a toponym derived from Middle Dutch baer (barren, infertile) and lo (light forest) suffixed with Nassau. The element Nassau was added to distinguish the settlement from Baarle-Hertog. Compare Baal, Baarlo, Bahr, Barlo and Hoog-Baarlo.
