    • 2020, Simon Anholt, The Good Country Equation, page 52:
Very conveniently for those of us who don't speak Bhutanese, nearly everybody in Bhutan speaks perfect British English since it is the language of instruction in their schools.

Noun

[edit]

Bhutanese (plural Bhutanese)

  1. (chiefly in the plural) A person from Bhutan or of Bhutanese descent.
    Synonym: Drukpa

Usage notes

[edit]

As with other terms for people formed with -ese, the countable singular noun in reference to a person (as in "I am a Bhutanese", "writing about Bhutanese cuisine as a Bhutanese") is uncommon and often taken as incorrect. In its place, the adjective is used, by itself (as in "I am Bhutanese") or before a noun like person, man, or woman ("writing about Bhutanese cuisine as a Bhutanese person"). See also -ish, which is similarly only used primarily as an adjective or as a plural noun.
