[edit]First attested as in borghere in 1327. Etymology uncertain. The likeliest proposed derivation is that of a compound of Old Dutch burg (“fortified settlement, castle”) and heri (“sandy ridge”). See also Dutch Low Saxon Börger.
The surname derives from an ablauted form of burger or from the toponym.
