German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From English broiler.

The exact way this term found its way into East German terminology is uncertain and subject to debate. One theory suggested that the Eastern Bloc attempted to breed chickens for consumption but failed, and thus had to import chickens from the USA. Another theory instead suggests that Bulgaria succeeded in breeding chickens and used the English loanword бройлери (brojleri) to better market the product in the West.

Noun[edit]

Broiler m (genitive Broilers, plural Broiler)

  1. (East Germany) broiler (chicken suitable for broiling)
