See also: brust
From Middle High German brust, from Old High German brust, from Proto-Germanic *brusts, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrews- (“to swell, blow, inflate”). Compare Dutch borst, English breast, Danish bryst, Swedish bröst.
- While the singular of the German word is perfectly neutral with regard to natural gender, the plural Brüste is roughly equivalent to English “breasts” and is now rarely used to refer to (human) males.
