Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from French buffet.

The spelling Büfett, preferred at least in Germany, represents the Germanised pronunciation in /ɛt/. Such a pronunciation has established itself in many words like Parkett, Kabarett, etc. In the case of Buffet, however, the French pronunciation has widely prevailed, which means that speakers now often pronounce /eː/ while reading and writing Büfett.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /bʏˈfeː/
  • IPA(key): /bʏˈfɛt/ (regional or archaic)
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -eː, -ɛt

Noun[edit]

Buffet n (strong, genitive Buffets, plural Buffets)

  1. (cooking) buffet
  2. (furniture) sideboard, buffet

Usage notes[edit]

  • The spelling Buffet has been an optional spelling since 2017.
