Three different D-subs

Etymology[edit]

Clipping of D-subminiature, from the Cannon part numbering system where such connectors’ designations are prefixed with D.

Noun[edit]

D-sub (plural D-subs)

  1. (electronics) an electrical connector with two or more rows of pins or sockets surrounded by a D-shaped metal shield
    • 1996, Jan Axelson, Parallel Port Complete: Programming, Interfacing & Using the PC’s Parallel Printer Port:
Some serial ports use a 25-contact D-sub, but with few exceptions, a 25-pin serial D-sub on a PC is male, with the female connector on the cable—the reverse of the parallel-port convention. (Other serial ports use 9-pin D-subs instead.)
