German

Etymology

Compound of Dach (roof) +‎ Boden (floor, ground).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈdaxˌboːdən/, [ˈdaχˌboːdən], [ˈdaχˌboːdn̩]
  • Audio:(file)

Noun

Dachboden m (genitive Dachbodens, plural Dachböden)

  1. (a storage room in the) attic

Usage notes

  • German usually distinguishes between Dachboden (used for storage) and Dachgeschoss (used for habitation). Either word may at times be used to combine both meanings, but there is no really neutral term such as English attic.
  • In accordance with the component word Boden (floor), one usually says auf dem Dachboden (“on the attic”) rather than im Dachboden.
