From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German tille, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German tilli, from Proto-Germanic *deliz (“sow thistle”), an indigenous herb of uncertain origin; possibly Proto-Indo-European *dʰelh₁- (“sprout, bloom”) (Albanian dal, Old Irish duille) or from a substrate.
The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (cf. (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German dille). Cognate with Dutch dille, English dill.
