Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese Espirito Santo, from Ecclesiastical Latin Spīritus Sānctus, calque of Ancient Greek Πνεῦμᾰ τὸ Ἅγῐον (Pneûmă tò Hágĭon), itself a calque of Biblical Hebrew רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ (rúakh hakódesh).
