    Etymology

      Literally, “South Mato Grosso”. The region was originally the southern part of Mato Grosso that split from it in the late 1970s, forming a new state.

      Other names that were proposed around the time of the state's founding include Pantanal (from its best known geographical feature) and Maracaju (from the Maracaju mountain range).
