Do not confuse Mato Grosso do Sul (abbreviated MS) with its neighboring state that borders it on the north, Mato Grosso (abbreviated MT).

Other names that were proposed, at the time of the state's establishment and afterwards, include "Pantanal" (a reference to its best known geographical feature) and "Maracaju" (a reference to the Maracaju Mountain Range that crosses the state from north to south).

Literally, South Mato Grosso, because was originally the southern part of Mato Grosso that split from it in the late 1970s, forming a new state.
