  1. (politics) Originally, a youthful libertarian, anti-communist party founded in 1988 by young democrats (hence its original name) in Hungary. Over the period 1992[1]–1995[2], it changed its position from liberal to conservative, reflected in the term polgári (civic) in its current name Fidesz – Magyar Polgári Szövetség (Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance).
