From a Slavic name, from Proto-Slavic *gordьcь, diminutive of *gordъ (fortification, castle). Cognate with Graz (and Slovene Grȃdəc), Czech Hradec (Králové), Polish grodziec (hill-fort), and Macedonian градец (gradec, diminutive of град (grad)).
