From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German Low German. Derived with the suffix -s from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German grīpen or grabben. These interrelated verbs are cognate with English gripe and grab respectively. For the semantics compare German begreifen (to understand).
