German[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from English hot dog.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈhɔtdɔk/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: Hot‧dog

Noun[edit]

Hotdog m or n (genitive Hotdogs, plural Hotdogs)

  1. (food) An American-style hot dog.

Usage notes[edit]

  • A sausage in a bread roll is a common German snack. However, the German version is not usually referred to as a Hotdog, but simply as a Wurst or Bratwurst, or specifically a Wurst/Bratwurst im Brötchen. The German version uses a different kind of bread roll and uses mustard as the sole topping (maximally also ketchup). The sausage is usually grilled, only rarely steamed.
