  • (village) First attested as aesthem in 1453. Calque of West Frisian Easthim, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian āst (east) and hēm (home, settlement) or hem (corner of alluvial land, inland polder). The element east was added to distinguish the settlement from Westhem.
  • (hamlet) First attested as Oestheem in 1525. Calque of West Frisian Easthim, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian āst (east) and hēm (home, settlement) or hem (corner of alluvial land, inland polder).
