Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German paradīs(e), from Old High German paradīs, borrowed from Latin paradīsus, from Ancient Greek παράδεισος (parádeisos), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *paridayjah. The modern form with -ie- perhaps partly from non-diphthongising dialects, but chiefly after the Latin.
