Etymology

[edit]

From Rastafarian +‎ -ism, from Amharic ራስ ተፈሪ (ras täfäri, from ራስ (ras, chief, head) +‎ ተፈሪ (täfäri, revered)), a title of Haile Selassie.

Proper noun

[edit]

Rastafarianism

  1. A religion that emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s out of biblical prophecy and rising black aspirations.

Usage notes

[edit]

The term is disparaged by many Rastafari, who believe that the use of -ism implies religious doctrine and institutional organisation, things they wish to avoid.
