Proto-Germanic

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱómsōd (union, gathering), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóm (beside, by, with, along). Cognate with Latin consilium (council, advisory body); < *consodium, Russian сосе́д (soséd, neighbour), Latin cum (with).

Alternative etymology suggests possible derivation from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ken-, *(s)kend- (to split off, secede). If so, then related to *skinþą.
