Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/hansō
Proto-Germanic
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ḱómsōd (“union, gathering”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóm (“beside, by, with, along”). Cognate with Latin consilium (“council, advisory body”); < *consodium, Russian сосе́д (soséd, “neighbour”), Latin cum (“with”).
Alternative etymology suggests possible derivation from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ken-, *(s)kend- (“to split off, secede”). If so, then related to *skinþą.
