Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *sweḱrúh₂. Indo-Iranian cognates include Sanskrit श्वश्रू (śvaśrū́) and Pashto خواښې (xwāśe, “mother-in-law”). Akin to Latin socrus (“mother-in-law”)
