Etymology 1

From *(s)wod-, an extension of proto-Indo-European *swé (self). Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vadìnti (to call). Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit वदति (vadati, to speak, to tell), Hittite [script needed] (u̯ātarnahh-, order, instruct), Welsh dweud (to speak, to say) (< *do-wed-) and probably Ancient Greek αὑδή (haudḗ).

Etymology 2

An enlonged grade[1] of *voditi, ultimately from *wedʰ- (to lead). Originally, the verb denoted the result of *vedenьje ("translation", "transfer"). Cognates include Sanskrit वधति (vadhati, to slay) and possibly Ancient Greek ὠθέω (ōthéō, to push).
