Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/vaditi
Proto-Slavic
Etymology 1
From *(s)wod-, an extension of proto-Indo-European *swé (“self”). Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vadìnti (“to call”). Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit वदति (vadati, “to speak, to tell”), Hittite [script needed] (u̯ātarnahh-, “order, instruct”), Welsh dweud (“to speak, to say”) (< *do-wed-) and probably Ancient Greek αὑδή (haudḗ).
For а similar development of proto-Indo-European *swé (“self”) to an exchange of arguments, see *swarjaną (“to swear”).
