Etymology[edit]

Exact origin uncertain. Perhaps from *ga- +‎ *mann-, but the stress is on the first syllable, whereas the prefix *ga- never bears stress. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *(a)gʷhemb- (to hop, jump, frisk).
