Etymology[edit]

A secondary zero-grade s-stem from the root of *grōaną and *grōniz, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰreh₁- (to grow, become green). It cannot be directly from *gʰr̥h₁-s-, where the syllabic sonorant would result in *gurs-.
