Etymology

Via (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German Low German from Middle Low German rīge. Cognate with Middle High German rīge (line, row, array). Originating from Northern Germany, Friedrich Jahn, a German gymnastics educator and nationalist, introduced this Low German term in the early 19th century.
