From Middle High German satz, saz, from Old High German -saz (only attested in compounds), abstract formation of the verb sezzen (whence setzn (to set, to put)), from Proto-West Germanic *sattjan, from Proto-Germanic *satjaną, from Proto-Indo-European *sodéyeti.
