German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle High German schrat, from Old High German scrato, from Proto-Germanic *skrattuz.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]Schrat m (strong, genitive Schrates or Schrats, plural Schrate, diminutive Schrätchen n)
- (folklore) bugbear, leshy (male woodland spirit)
- 1852, Johann Wilhelm Wolf, “Einzelne elbische Wesen”, in Die deutsche Götterlehre […] , page 59:
- Related to him is the bugbear (OHG. Scrat), a wild, shaggy, rough forest spirit comparable to the Roman faun and Silvanus or the Greek satyr. He only appears as a male living alone, which differentiates him from the forest folk especially well-known in southeastern Germany, the Wood People or Moss People, who also occasionally appear singly, however mostly as a dwarfish people dwelling together.
