Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German sinagoge, from Latin synagoga, from Ancient Greek συναγωγή (sunagōgḗ). Used in German texts since the 12th century, but mainly a learned word. The popular term was Judenschule; compare Yiddish שול (shul).
