RFD discussion: August–November 2022[edit]

The following discussion has been moved from Wiktionary:Requests for deletion (permalink).

This discussion is no longer live and is left here as an archive. Please do not modify this conversation, but feel free to discuss its conclusions.

Japanese コロナちゃん (Korona-chan)

I had initially shot this on sight as both SOP and a fictional character name, as described at Wiktionary:Requests_for_verification/CJK#Corona-chan, but the consensus emerged to run this by RFD, so I'm posting here.

Pinging the editors participating in the RFV thread: @Equinox, AG202, Hàlian.

I continue to think we should  delete this entry:

  • This term Korona-chan refers to a fictional character that is essentially just the personification of the COVID-19 coronavirus. This strikes me as not a lexical item, and something more suitable for an encyclopedia (as I noted in the RFV thread).
  • Literally anything can be personified in Japanese by adding one of the name suffixes, such as the diminutive ちゃん (-chan) used for this entry or the more polite and ubiquitous さん (-san) -- effectively making this entry an SOP.
  • Creating editor @Hàlian brought up the existence of the ja:w:コロナちゃん article on the JA WP as evidence of notability and reason for creating an entry here. I pointed out that notability is irrelevant for the Wiktionary:Criteria for inclusion, whereas evidence of idiomaticity would help to justify having a Wiktionary entry. The JA WP page describes the Korona-chan meme, but does not include anything that indicates idiomatic meanings.

There was also a corresponding page at Corona-chan#Japanese, which I leave deleted for now -- 1) this was just a soft-redirect romanization entry pointing readers to the lemma at コロナちゃん, and 2) this is an incorrect romanization, and should be Korona-chan instead. (The only use for the letter "C" in romaji is in the digraph ⟨ch⟩ for the /t͡ɕ/ sound.) We can restore and move the soft-redirect entry later if needed, depending on the outcome of this RFD discussion for the lemma entry.

Curious what others think. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 19:18, 25 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
