Etymology 2 (southern form of không)

[edit]

@PhanAnh123, Fumiko Take

What is the source of the hỏi-ngã tone change here? Is this also a fusion with ấy ({{vi-etym-hoi}}) like the other southern hỏi-tone inventions? (Sorry if I have asked the million-dollar question.)

Also I feel there is a difference between this and hông, this form being more emphatic (?) ― is this correct? Wyang (talk) 09:49, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

hổng the more informal (even more informal than hông) variant of không. It's probably just me but I feel like this hỏi tone is due to the influence of chẳng and chả.PhanAnh123 (talk)

@PhanAnh123 I came across a discussion on this in Thompson's A Vietnamese Reference Grammar (1987): relevant pages. Maybe useful. Wyang (talk) 05:40, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
