Etymology for the sex act[edit]

Can we confirm that it's a variant of ream? I don't see how that makes sense, since reaming is penetrative intercourse. I suppose I would have assumed it was from "rim", i.e. the outer edge of the anus that is licked. Equinox 15:27, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Are such vulgar and abased things permitted here? They are not in real academic sources. 120.29.109.137 14:44, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We describe language as it is. Language is sometimes dirty and vulgar. Deal with it. — surjection??19:11, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What rule is that? And when did wiktionary allow rude behaviour also? Sorry, I was unaware this is no longer supposed to be academic, but merely some childish porn site. 120.29.109.137
Don't use it then. We will continue to define all words, not a puritanical subset. Swear-words are in all major print dictionaries too, of course. Equinox 12:28, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That was not really rude, just a wee blunt. Wikimedia sites have never been academic, but having some choice vulgarities on it does not make this a porn site. Certainly no CP site, I hope. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 14:00, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'd expect a similar connection to "edge", perhaps indirectly via rimjob. @Leasnam Could you elaborate on the link to ream, since that was added by you. Etymonline does allow influence from ream but is more tentative. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 14:00, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ream simply makes more sense. The original sense of 'ream' is to "enlarge a hole" (as in 'get it ready for penetration'), not only to penetrate it. Source comes from OED here [[1]], etymology 2. ream job (attested early 20th c.) for oral anal stimulation (i.e. "anilingus"; more rarely for anal sex, see here [[2]]) is older than rimjob, which doesn't show up till the mid 70's; the alteration most likely due to the obscurity of the word 'ream' and younger hearers mistaking it for 'rim' for obvious analogical reasons Leasnam (talk) 08:27, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
