Hi. Thanks for your additions. In case you're new, here's some welcome/help stuff. Equinox 00:08, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

Who is Edward Spenser? Did you mean Edmund Spenser? --EncycloPetey 01:23, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Very quick and very easy to use. Mglovesfun (talk) 17:39, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider using this instead of doing it manually, otherwise this needs doing to all the pages you create. Conrad.Irwin 00:01, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IIRC AF does it, so don't bother, CI.—msh210 05:59, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

These entries are sum-of-parts (petty officer first class), and should not exist according to en.wikt guidelines. Can you present a counter argument for their creation? - Amgine/talk 02:47, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If we accept the argument that each precise variant of "petty officer" needs a separate and exclusive entry, that would imply that every variant of "footman" would likewise require inclusion, of which there were some 80 variants within the household of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Most such titles are subsumed in larger classes, the basis for military ranks being hierarchy.
One further point to consider: Ranks are titles, and as such usually capitalized. Ratings (below non-commissioned officers) are not. - Amgine/talk 03:11, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there are far more ranks than could possibly be useful. I believe including every possible rank begins to look more encyclopedic than dictionary. Perhaps more useful would be a single table under petty officer or similar detailing various current national variants rather than every possible military rank throughout history, but that would be my personal opinion and not a policy. - Amgine/talk 03:33, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But the same argument presented to justify the sub-rankings of petty officers applies to each possible rank, including boot-black. - Amgine/talk 03:56, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hate to butt in on this conversation, but you might FWIW wish to see User:Msh210/Sandbox#name_prependages.—msh210 22:10, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Um... so all genes have translated products? That isn't true. The term "gene expression" refers generally to the processes by which a gene is expressed, and because of that I'm not sure this phrase merits a separate Wiktionary entry, since "gene expression" is merely the "expression" of a "gene". --EncycloPetey 18:59, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

quotations[edit]

In this edit, you altered a quotation so that it no longer matches the source from which it came. That should never happen. --EncycloPetey 19:54, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alford plea[edit]

Hey there, I noticed you created the page on Alford plea, thanks for the contribution. Just to let you know I added some passages from references. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 19:24, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
