• Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.

• Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.

petty officer first class, &c.

These entries are sum-of-parts (petty officer first class), and should not exist according to en.wikt guidelines. Can you present a counter argument for their creation? - Amgine/^talk 02:47, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

If we accept the argument that each precise variant of "petty officer" needs a separate and exclusive entry, that would imply that every variant of "footman" would likewise require inclusion, of which there were some 80 variants within the household of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Most such titles are subsumed in larger classes, the basis for military ranks being hierarchy.

One further point to consider: Ranks are titles, and as such usually capitalized. Ratings (below non-commissioned officers) are not. - Amgine/^talk 03:11, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, there are far more ranks than could possibly be useful. I believe including every possible rank begins to look more encyclopedic than dictionary. Perhaps more useful would be a single table under petty officer or similar detailing various current national variants rather than every possible military rank throughout history, but that would be my personal opinion and not a policy. - Amgine/^talk 03:33, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

gene expression

Um... so all genes have translated products? That isn't true. The term "gene expression" refers generally to the processes by which a gene is expressed, and because of that I'm not sure this phrase merits a separate Wiktionary entry, since "gene expression" is merely the "expression" of a "gene". --EncycloPetey 18:59, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
