Welcome message
[edit]Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!
Also, please note for English and many other languages we have language specific head templates like {{en-noun}}
, so you should use those instead of {{head}}
. See this diff here as an example. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 10:49, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Okay! Does it also need the |- ? Archearchy (talk) 10:51, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Pipes (|) are used to separate template paramaters, as you may already know. In this case, the dash (-) passed to the template is to indicate the noun is uncountable. Another situation you may encounter in English entries is if the plural is irregular. In that case you pass the actual plural to the template so it won't just erroneously add -s to the end. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 10:59, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, so Archearchy (plural entries)? Archearchy (talk) 11:04, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- How can I fix error? In Damascus steel says German Damast, but Damast is cloth. Archearchy (talk) 11:05, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- You mean in the translation table? Acolyte of Ice (talk) 11:08, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Yes! This is Duden's link https://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/Damast Archearchy (talk) 11:12, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Well, if it's wrong just delete it from the table, and if you know the correct translation add it. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 11:14, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
Taxonomic names
[edit]It's good to see someone else interested in traditional technologies. I'm an amateur ethnobiologist with some background in botany and anthropology as well as linguistics. Let me know if I can help with anything.
When you give a taxonomic name, please use the {{taxlink}}
template. It links to an article on the name (at Wikispecies by default, but you can make it link to English Wikipedia as well) and tags the entry so that those who are working on adding taxonomic-name entries to Wiktionary are aware of it. It will also tell you in preview if there's already an entry, in which case you can link to that directly.
There's also {{vern}}
, that does something like that for common/vernacular names.
Thanks! Chuck Entz (talk) 14:11, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks! Very useful. Does it give right italic for species, genus, and no italic for family, kingdom and all? Archearchy (talk) 09:00, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Countability
[edit]Please see User:Equinox for tips on countability. You can use "internal stress" without "a" or "the" (like "Internal stress is a thing") so that can be uncountable so you use the ~. Check my edit there. Equinox ◑ 10:44, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Okay! So internal stress is more countable because "much internal stress" is more normal then "many internal stresses"? And use ~ if it is both. Thanks! Archearchy (talk) 10:53, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Should I use the syn of template? Archearchy (talk) 10:55, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
