Definition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
  • If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.

You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 10:04, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

I'd like to thank you again for your contributions on Afrikaans. As you can tell, native speakers of Afrikaans are badly needed here. One thing to keep in mind is that Wiktionary is a descriptive (descriptivist) dictionary, so if a single word meets the criteria for inclusion (3 independent uses spanning a year) it's usually included (unless they're typos, scannos, uncommon misspellings, etc.). However, you are free to tag terms as nonstandard or uncommon as appropriate. Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 13:10, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Feel free to create the Afrikaans lemma at voertsek, as that looks like the most common form on Google Books by far. The English should probably stay where it is, though. Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 10:04, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Done. I also want to fix kolonist, the Afrikaans translation is without the "t" at the end. Can I proceed, or will it also be rolled back? Regards. Naudefj (talk) 04:55, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes check.svg Done. That one was my fault. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 05:06, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

It looks like you copy-pasted the trans-table from holonym, and you didn't change the gloss. I've now fixed it. Please be more careful. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 17:26, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

Oeps, jammer! I understand the entry layout of the Afrikaans Wiktionary, but the English one is still a bit of a misery to me. Groete. Naudefj (talk) 19:58, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
No worries, just ask if you need any help. Your additions have been good, and I appreciate someone checking our Afrikaans content. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:11, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

changing t to t+[edit]

It is all right if you change {{t}} to {{t+}} (where appropriate, of course), but the same work is also regularly done by bots, so you can also decide to leave that to them. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 15:55, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Good to know, thanks. I'll focus on more productive tasks. Regards. Naudefj (talk) 16:13, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Do you know whether the Afrikaans is a calque/adaptation of Dutch rechtsstaat or German Rechtsstaat? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:22, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Not sure, but if I have to guess, I'll say it is from German:
"Vanaf 1652 het hoofsaaklik Nederduitse en Hoogduitse immigrante hulle aan die Kaap gevestig."[1]
And from rechtsstaat: "Around the 1860s. From recht +‎ -s- +‎ staat, calque of German Rechtsstaat."

Right, that isn't enough to decide the origin. Do you know of any good Afrikaans newspaper databases? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:57, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
