Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Vahag (talk) 21:45, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ոյ[edit]

This is not correct. Just search անույշ, ույժ, զգույշ, բույժ in any corpus, for example Google Books. Vahag (talk) 07:19, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I searched them, and the examples mostly appear to be Western Armenian in the reformed orthography—in other words, errors by individuals blindly applying ոյԲ > ույԲ. The rule that in most words -ոյշ, -ոյժ should be pronounced as -ուշ, -ուժ is mentioned in Armenag Yeghiayian's Western Armenian Orthographic, Orthoepic, Stylistic Manual (2022) on page 94 (where he also proscribes these spellings, revealing them to be archaic and illogical). Similarly, Kevork Gulian's Elementary Modern Armenian Grammar (1902) gives the name Անոյշ as Anoush in Latin letters, with no trace of a semivowel. The same rule used to apply in Eastern Armenian as well, but the spellings անուշ, ուժ etc. were accepted earlier than in Western Armenian. Words in -ույշ and -ույժ are in origin spelling pronunciations, similarly to how some people now say ի մի[ջ]ի այլոց instead of ի մի[չ]ի այլոց. RagingPichu (talk) 21:18, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's still not right to say that անոյշ (anoyš) is the traditional orthography spelling of անուշ (anuš). It's like saying հէր (hēr) is the traditional orthography spelling of հայր (hayr). There is no TAO ոյժ > RAO ուժ rule. Vahag (talk) 18:57, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think this analogy is better: the word for "soap" used to be աւճար and pronounced as such. In the medieval period the pronunciation shifted to become օճար but the spelling աւճար was kept for hundreds of years; օ for աւ became general only a few centuries after the letter itself entered Armenian. The spelling անոյշ is analogous to աւճար, and անուշ to օճար, with the difference being that անոյշ shifted to անուշ mostly in the 19th and 20th centuries and that some words sporadically acquired a spelling pronunciation.
Anyway, you're right about it not being a traditional orthography version and an alternate spelling instead. However, forms in -ույշ/-ույժ that never acquired the spelling pronunciation in Eastern Armenian should not exist, such as *անույշ. RagingPichu (talk) 23:16, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Parev[edit]

i'm an undergrad so i haven't produced any research, but i am well-read enough (reading literature for the past 7 years) that i have gotten easy As in all my linguistics classes. so an uncredentialed linguist. RagingPichu (talk) 21:48, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
