Please read WT:CFI and look at existing English entries before trying to create any more. Your entries lack all of the necessary formatting. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 11:55, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

I want to chat with you more because sometimes I make erroneous changes that I want to change and I don't think I can change the mistakes by myself.
Right now I have an issue in the page that I just created about the word: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Chincoteague_pony
It should have been "Chincoteague Pony" instead of "Chincoteague Pony".
Are there any more easier way for me to get help (by the community) than just me being here trying to get help by you, Equinox? The Dictionary Man20 (talk) 22:45, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • instead of "Chincoteague pony"

I think this minor thing about "Chincoteague Pony" instead of "Chincoteague pony" is not bothering anyways, there is no correct way. Either way is correct.. no need change on this word, Equinox. I guess. The Dictionary Man20 (talk) 22:50, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I suggest posting on Wiktionary:Tea room. There's also Wiktionary:Information desk, which is more geared toward helping new users, but fewer people respond there. 98.170.164.88 22:54, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Equinox 20:11, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Copyright[edit]

Hi, you can't just copy definitions from other sites like Webster, due to copyright law. Equinox 23:50, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, sorry.. I took it from https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cobalt%20green (sense 2), I "thought" modifying the definition would make it possible to abide by the copyright law.
Please, I want to see the copyrights terms of service/laws if you want to link it. The Dictionary Man20 (talk) 23:55, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Every time you create a new page on here, it gives you the links at the bottom of the editor screen, where it says: "By clicking the Publish changes button, you are agreeing to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL. You agree that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license."
Exception: because Wikipedia has the same free licence that we do, you can generally reuse text from Wikipedia without changing it. Equinox 09:42, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Then, when I am just copying text / definitions from Wikipedia I have to add "Further reading" or anything more into the page, yes? The Dictionary Man20 (talk) 09:48, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Copying from Wikipedia[edit]

You should be careful about taking stuff from Wikipedia - we don't count it for WT:CFI and it's filled with protologisms that are unattestable. Vininn126 (talk) 23:32, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

It's also not a good idea to plagiarize, which is what you're doing at the moment, as it suggests you're not putting much thought into things. The first line of a Wikipedia article might be a good introduction to a topic, but it frequently doesn't give as much information as a good definition would. For example, your definition of Cyrus–Beck algorithm is on the same level as defining tiger as "a kind of animal". Not enough. Theknightwho (talk) 23:39, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I need help please! https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Jagdterrier
I am trying to link the word (definition of the word in the definition) but the definition of the word (quarry) have multiple / different definitions and I want to link to the 2nd definition, how to do that? The Dictionary Man20 (talk) 09:39, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Why did you create the entry fulva e a lobeira? The phrase doesn't seem to be used at all except on one Wikipedia article and various sites that have copied from Wikipedia. 70.172.194.25 05:07, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
