Etymology[edit]

The word arises in Middle High German, around 1300, derived from the plural of wurz "herb, spice". This plural came to be used as a collective, and developed its own plural during the early modern period. The neuter Gewürz develops from the same source and with the same meaning by the end of the Middle High German period.
