Etymology[edit]

Compound of Wasser ‎(water) +‎ Stoff ‎(substance). A calque of French hydrogène which is itself a compound modelled after Ancient Greek ὕδωρ ‎(húdōr, water) + γεννάω ‎(gennáō, I bring forth). Compare Dutch waterstof and Polish wodór.
