From Wotan (Odin) +‎ -s- +‎ Tag (day), a learned calque of Middle Low German wôdenesdach and other descendants of Proto-West Germanic *Wōdanas dag. Doublet of earlier Wodenstag, which is directly from Middle Low German. Compare English Wednesday.
