From Middle High German zære (tears), plural of zār m, a Central German variant of zaher, from Old High German zahar (tear), from Proto-Germanic *tahrą, from Proto-Indo-European *dáḱru-. Cognate with English tear, Danish tår, Gothic 𐍄𐌰𐌲𐍂 (tagr). Possibly related to Träne.
